Theme: Sakai Big Boys’ Challenge to Sports and Education Environment in Japan

Sakai Big Boys” is a youth baseball team for elementary and junior high school students operating mainly in the Osaka area. The theme of the team is “For the future of children” in the true sense of the word, to prepare young players to play an active role as both players and members of society in the future. By shortening practice time and limiting pitch counts, the team focuses on the development of players rather than on the winning of games. Currently, the team has nearly 200 players.
Since 2014, “Futures League” has been holding a league-style tournament, which is rare in the Japanese amateur baseball world. This new concept of the league-style tournament has been expanded to various junior high school baseball teams in the Kansai region and is now spreading to high school baseball as well.
Mr. Sakanaga, the coach of the junior high school team, played a big role and his experience studying sports in other countries such as the Dominican Republic, which has produced many major leaguers, is also widely reflected in this movement.
In this session, Mr. Sakanaga will introduce the efforts of “Sakai Big Boys”, and we will have an opportunity to think together about the future of sports and education.
